How to play Vaalmonica

How to play Vaalmonica

Vaalmonica – one of the unique Pendulum and Link-based archetypes. Inspired by the "tear" between two opposing sides of the soul – the urging voice of the holy Angel (Angelo) and the temptation of the Demon (Dimonno) , Vaalmonica operates with an extremely unusual mechanism. You will manipulate the rhythm of the battle by constantly balancing restoring Life Points (LP) and actively depleting your own HP to accumulate Resonance Counters . When this "music" reaches its climax with enough counters, you will unlock ultimate powers: from Link-1 monsters capable of area-of-effect damage, to the "Final Boss" Vaalmonica Concord – an impenetrable 3000 ATK fortress, completely immune to all opponent's card effects.

Vaalmonica's biggest enemy isn't your opponent's tech cards, but the time pressure ! With its overlapping chains and lengthy card effects, this isn't a linear deck where you can just randomly pick cards and win. It requires you to truly understand your cards, have sharp thinking, and quick hands to avoid a regrettable loss.

If you're ready to master a high-level control playstyle and turn the arena into your own personal music stage, let's dive into the details of this guide!

General introduction

General introduction

Plot

Vaalmonica, The Agathokakological Voice , is a mysterious artifact capable of summoning entities possessing the power to reshape the world. It has chosen Selettrice Vaalmonica as its master, and true to its name, the agathokakological voice urges her to choose between virtue and temptation. Dimonno Vaalmonica and Angello Vaalmonica whisper in her ear, influencing her decision as they attempt to fill their respective chalices on Vaalmonica. Depending on which chalice is filled first, Zebufera , the Vaalmonican Hallow Heathen , or Duralume, the Vaalmonican Heathen Hallow, will appear and change the world in their respective forms. But who truly represents good?

INTERESTING FACT: Angello and Dimonno's gloves (and their "Attribute" attributes) reveal their true intentions. Despite her name being Angello, she is actually more cunning and manipulative, while Dimonno is depicted as an honest and upright person.

Playing style

Vaalmonica constantly gives you a choice between base point-boosting effects and damage-dealing effects. Each time you choose, Angello Vaalmonica or Dimonno Vaalmonica will receive a Counter (i.e., filling their holy grail). Unsurprisingly, the most appealing effects are those that deal damage and put a counter on Dimonno. Fortunately, this is also where you want to get most of your counters right from turn 1.

According to the storyline, the goal is to fill Vaalmonica's Cups by accumulating 3 counters on either Dimonno or Angello. This not only activates Vaalmonica, the Agathokakological Voice , to control your opponent's monsters, but more importantly, it allows you to summon Zebufera, Vaalmonican Hallow Heathen , or Duralume, Vaalmonican Heathen Hallow, using any Monster with that Effect as material.

While you control a monster, except "Selettrice Vaalmonica", your opponent's monsters cannot target this card for attacks. You can only use each of the following effects of "Selettrice Vaalmonica" once per turn. If this card is Normal or Pendulum Summoned: You can add 1 "Vaalmonica" card from your Deck to your hand, except "Selettrice Vaalmonica". If this card is sent to the GY and you have 2 "Vaalmonica" cards in your Pendulum Zones: You can add this card to your hand.

As the most versatile searcher card in this deck, Selettrice retrieves any Vaalmonica card from your deck. Note that this effect is activated by Normal Summon or Pendulum Summon, but not by Special Summoning in other ways.

Selettrice is also an ideal card to discard to take advantage of the effects of Dimonno Vaalmonica and Angello Vaalmonica , bringing both of these cards into your Pendulum Zone. This activates Selettrice back into your hand so you can Normal Summon or Pendulum Summon it.

  • TIP: Selettrice's search effect will not activate if you Special Summon her with Vaalmonica Invitare . In this case, use her as a Link material and activate Selettrice's effect to return her to your hand. Now you can Normal Summon her and activate the search effect.

[ Pendulum Effect ] Each time you take effect damage while you control a Fairy Monster Card in your other Pendulum Zone, place 1 Resonance Counter on this card. Monsters your opponent controls lose 100 ATK for each Resonance Counter on your field. [ Monster Effect ] If this card is in your hand: You can discard 1 other card; take 1 "Angello Vaalmonica" from your Deck, and place this card and that card in your Pendulum Zones. During your Main Phase, if this card was Normal or Special Summoned this turn: You can banish 1 "Vaalmonica" Normal Spell/Trap from your GY; apply whichever effect on that card includes taking damage. You can only use each effect of "Dimonno Vaalmonica" once per turn.

[ Pendulum Effect ] Each time you gain LP while you control a Fiend Monster Card in your other Pendulum Zone, place 1 Resonance Counter on this card. Once per turn, when an opponent's monster declares an attack, you can: Immediately after this effect resolves, Link Summon 1 "Vaalmonica" Link Monster. [ Monster Effect ] If this card is in your hand: You can discard 1 other card; take 1 "Dimonno Vaalmonica" from your Deck, and place this card and that card in your Pendulum Zones. During your Main Phase, if this card was Normal or Special Summoned this turn: You can banish 1 "Vaalmonica" Normal Spell/Trap from your GY; apply whichever effect on that card includes gaining LP. You can only use each effect of "Angello Vaalmonica" once per turn.

Each of these cards has the effect of placing itself and its opposite in the Pendulum Zone - the card that is usually discarded is Selettrice Vaalmonica.

Each card also has the effect of copying the corresponding effect of any normal Vaalmonica Spell/Trap card in the Graveyard . This is important not only for reusing Vaalmonica effects (Dimonno copies the effect of Vaalmonica Scelta to search for another card), but also for placing Counter Points in your Pendulum Zone. Vaalmonica Invitare 's second effect allows you to Pendulum Summon both monsters, so you will often have 2 Vaalmonica effects copied.

In addition to accumulating counters…

  • Dimonno's Pendulum effect reduces the opponent monster's ATK by 300-600, sometimes even more.
  • Angello's Pendulum effect is activated if your opponent attacks any of your monsters while you have 3 counters on Dimonno or Angello, allowing you to interrupt that attack by Link Summoning the corresponding Vaalmonica monster — which can then immediately use its effect to inflict further disruption on your opponent.

You can only Special Summon "Duralume, Vaalmonican Heathen Hallow" once per turn. If this card is Link Summoned: You can target monsters your opponent controls, up to the number of Resonance Counters in your Pendulum Zone; destroy them. You can remove 3 Resonance Counters from your Pendulum Zone; this card can make up to 3 attacks during each Battle Phase this turn.

The primary target in most cases will be Zebufera, meaning you'll prioritize damage-dealing Vaalmonica effects to get 3 counters to Dimonno. Zebufera will often copy the activation effect of Vaalmonica Followed Rhythm , allowing you to apply both effects simultaneously.

  • TIP: This effect can be used by any Zebufera clone you control, meaning you can use it a second time if you summon another clone using Angello's Pendulum Effect.

Note that Zebufera's Continuous Effect protects all cards you control, which also prevents your opponent from destroying cards that don't belong to this Archetype.

Duralume isn't always necessary, but she's a great tool for ending the game. Her first effect destroys your opponent's monsters, and her second can deal 7500 damage. Angello's Pendulum effect can also summon this card (and activate her effect) during your opponent's Battle Phase if you have 3 counters on Angello.

Once per turn, when your opponent would Special Summon a monster(s), if you have 3+ Resonance Counters on your field (Quick Effect): You can negate the Special Summon, and if you do, destroy that monster(s), then remove 3 Resonance Counters from your field.

Selettrice - the chosen one to wield the power of Vaalmonica!

Varar requires Zebufera or Duralume as materials, so this card is usually summoned on turn 2 or later to finish the game. You can also summon her during your opponent's turn using the effect of Vaalmonica Creation , ideally after using Zebufera's effect. If you want to summon her on turn 1, use Duralume as materials (Creation can put 3 counters on Angello) because Zebufera has even better disruptive potential than Varar.

Unfortunately, Varar isn't as powerful as expected. Her immunity can be negated if your Counters are removed, and her multiple-attack effect requires you to keep several level 4 Vaalmonicans on the field—which reduces her ability to clear the opponent's field. However, she is easily summoned on turn 2 and can be useful in difficult situations.

You can only activate 1 "Vaalmonica Scelta" per turn.

These three Spell cards are the searchers alongside Selettrice Vaalmonica . (Field x2-3 ; Scelta x1-2 ; Invitare x1)

Voice gains the added effect of taking control of your opponent's monster when Dimonno or Angello reaches their third counter. This is a significant disruption, as you can transform that stolen monster into Zebufera, Duralume, or Varar. This effect can also be triggered during your opponent's turn.

Scelta's draw effect is pretty good, but the search effect is what we really need. Usually, it's best to search Vaalmonica Invitare , as this will get both Dimonno and Angello so you can Pendulum Summon them — and then Dimonno copies Scelta's effect to search for another card.

Invitare doesn't directly set Resonance Counters, but its second effect allows you to Pendulum Summon both Dimonno and Angello, whose effects then create a counter by replicating Vaalmonica's effect. Invitare's first effect is only to be used as a last resort.

        • TIP: If you don't have Dimonno and Angello in your Pendulum Zone, Invitare can also search for them for that purpose. The card you just added to your hand will use its effect to set up the Pendulum Zone, and the card you place in the Extra Deck will be Pendulum Summoned. Think carefully about your moves when deciding whether to place Dimonno or Angello in the Extra Deck.

You can only activate 1 "Vaalmonica Disarmonia" per turn.

              (Versare x1 ; Disarmonia x1 ; Intonare x0-1)

Versare often sends a Vaalmonica Trap card to the Graveyard so Zebufera can copy its effect. It can also search for Selettrice if needed, as this card will instantly return to your hand if you control two Vaalmonica cards in your Pendulum Zone.

Disarmonia is the only Spell that requires a Vaalmonica card in the Pendulum Zone. In return, it directly applies an additional Counter to a card of your choice. And once again, the damage effect is used more often, as you'll want to retrieve the card Versare sent to the graveyard.

Finally, Intonare provides the potential for expanding combo-oriented variations by reviving a monster from the Graveyard. This card is less frequently used than other Spell cards, as it relies on the monster already being in the Graveyard and Special Summoning Selettrice Vaalmonica with this card doesn't trigger its search effect.

If you control a "Vaalmonica" Link Monster, you can apply both effects in sequence. ● Gain 500 LP, also for the rest of this turn, your opponent cannot target "Vaalmonica" Monster Cards you control with card effects. ● Take 500 damage, then you can negate the effects of 1 Effect Monster your opponent controls, until the end of this turn. You can only activate 1 "Vaalmonica Chosen Melody" per turn.

                  (Rhythm x1 ; Chosen Melody x0-1)

Rhythm is the best form of interaction in this deck — not only because you can often apply both of its effects, but also because Zebufera allows you to do so multiple times in a single turn. Neither effect targets. You can also choose to simply increase your life points and/or take damage to set a counter, without destroying Spell/Trap cards or returning monsters to your hand.

Melody is decent but not particularly impressive. The monster disabling effect is good, but the effect that makes your Vaalmonica Monsters (including those in the Pendulum Zone) untargetable makes it difficult to time optimally. It's outmatched by other Trap cards in the same archetype, and most players choose to skip it.

                  Trap Continuous
                  Vaalmonica Creation

While you have 6 or more Resonance Counters on your field, "Vaalmonica" Link Monsters you control gain 1200 ATK. You can only use each of the following effects of "Vaalmonica Creation" once per turn. If your opponent Special Summons a monster(s), you can (except during the Damage Step): Immediately after this effect resolves, Link Summon 1 "Vaalmonica" Link Monster. If this card is sent from the hand or field to the GY: You can place Resonance Counters on 1 card in your Pendulum Zone that you can place a Resonance Counter on, so it has 3 Resonance Counters.

Creation is a rather controversial card. Some players ignore it, but many use x1-2 to discard Creation and activate its effect to place counters.

The ATK boost effect is hardly worth mentioning. Creation's second effect is useful for turning a used (or negated) Zebufera clone into a second one, allowing you to replicate Rhythm's effect. It can also Link Varar if you want to disable another summon.

Creation's third effect places 3 counters on either Dimonno or Angello, allowing you to summon Zebufera or Duralume without having to use many Vaalmonica spell cards. This is also the most viable—though unstable—way to set up the field on turn 1 with both Zebufera and Varar (using Duralume as material), as Creation places 3 counters on Angello while your spell cards place markers on Dimonno.

                    Trap Counter
                    Vaalmonica Ereditare

When a Spell/Trap Card, or monster effect, is activated while you control a "Vaalmonica" Link Monster: Negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that card. You can banish this card from your GY; shuffle into the Deck, "Vaalmonica" cards from your face-up Extra Deck, GY, and/or banishment, except "Vaalmonica Ereditare", up to the number of Resonance Counters on your field, then you can draw 1 card for every 3 cards shuffled. You can only use 1 "Vaalmonica Ereditare" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

An Omni-Negate card that can be searched! This card must definitely be a Staple, right?

Ereditare is certainly a good card, but there are two things that prevent it from being widely used in matches:

                      • It requires a Link Vaalmonica monster on the field, which means it's useless if you can't get enough 3 counters on Dimonno or Angello and perform a Link Summon.
                      • This is a Counter Trap card, so Zebufera cannot copy its effect. This means you should look for Rhythm rather than Ereditare.

The Vaalmonica card recycling and drawing effects are decent, but overall too little and too late. With 3-5 Vaalmonica cards in the Graveyard/Banish, you can only draw 1 card thanks to Ereditare's effect. (You shouldn't shuffle monsters from your face-down Extra Deck as they can be Pendulum Summoned.)

                      Most people only play x1.

2 Level 8 monsters If this card has a "Photon" card as material, it cannot be destroyed by card effects. You can only use each of the following effects of "Number 90: Galaxy-Eyes Photon Lord" once per turn. ● When an opponent's monster activates its effect (Quick Effect): You can detach 1 material from this card; negate that monster's effect, and if the detached material was a "Galaxy" card, destroy that card. ● During your opponent's turn (Quick Effect): You can take 1 "Photon" or "Galaxy" card from your Deck, and either add it to your hand or attach it to this card as material.

Pure Vaalmonica already has a very good defense with Archetype Traps and Link Monsters. However, when you add the Galaxy/Photon Engine, your goal shifts from "normal control" to "suffocating your opponent with a barrage of counter traps." This engine provides you with an extremely powerful counter trap card, Tachyon Transmigration (and even Numbers Protection, which I'll discuss later) , which, combined with Vaalmonica traps, completely shuts down any attempts by your opponent to play their cards.

All of Vaalmonica's Main Deck monsters ( Celatris, Angelo, Dimonno ) are Tier 4. This is the perfect condition for easily Xyz Summoning Galaxy Photon Dragon right at the start of your combo without expending any effort.

*A pretty good post interaction trick: "Give a gift and then ask for it back"*

Thanks to the combination of Galaxy Photon Dragon and Vaalmonica's Environment card:

                            • Step 1: Use Galaxy Photon Dragon to add and summon Tachyon Primal to your opponent's side of the field.

                            • Step 2: Since Tachyon Primal is on the opponent's side of the field, you can immediately activate the second effect of the skill. Then continue with the Vaalmonica combo to accumulate enough counters for the third skill.

                            • Step 3: As soon as you reach the 3rd counter, Vaalmonica Environment Spell activates its effect: Target an opponent's monster and steal its control . Steal back the Tachyon Primal monster you just gifted to your field!

                            • Step 4: Upon returning to your field, Tachyon Primal will activate the search effect, directly transferring Tachyon Transmigration to your hand.

                            • Call Photon Lord: Galaxy Photon Dragon possesses a Level-changing effect, transforming a monster on the field into a Level 8 monster. Combined with another Level 8 resource (or Tachyon Primal itself), you can easily Overlay it into Galaxy-Eyes Photon Lord to gain an additional turn to negate hard monster effects on the field.

If an Xyz Monster(s) is on the field: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. You can send 1 other card from your hand or field to the GY; add 1 "Xyz", "Onomat", "Zexal", or "Number" Spell/Trap, from your Deck to your hand. You can only use each effect of "Astraltopia" once per turn.

                            Trap Counter
                            Numbers Protection

When a Spell/Trap Card, or monster effect, is activated, while you control a "Number" Xyz Monster: Negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that card. If a "Number" Xyz Monster(s) you control is destroyed by battle or card effect, while this card is in your GY: You can Set this card, but banish it when it leaves the field. You can only use 1 "Numbers Protection" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Following Tachyon Transmigration, you can continue to combine these two cards into your deck to create an endboard that can have up to 3 Counter Traps.

Activating Astraltopia to get the third trap: Because if you execute the Galaxy/Tachyon combo, you'll definitely have a Number-type Xyz monster ( Photon Lord or Galaxy Photon Dragon ) on the field, Astraltopia in your hand will be Special Summoned for free. Then, Astraltopia discards 1 Vaalmonica card (like Followed Rhythm ) to the Graveyard to search for the third Counter Trap card: Numbers Protection .

                              Conclusion

Vaalmonica is one of Konami's best attempts at using the Pendulum mechanics for something unique, rather than simply spamming the Extra Deck like previous Pendulum themes. While this deck can utilize conventional choices, it has very interesting interactions similar to the storyline, encouraging players to participate in minigames like filling Dimonno and Angello's cups, and relying on Vaalmonica's Link monsters.

So let's give Pendulum another chance!
